Vintage French Religious Devotional - Agnus Dei with Yellow Rose and Image of Jesus Christ as a Child
May I offer:
Purchased by me in Paris about 20 or 30 years ago, may I offer this handmade religious devotional, an Agnus Dei depicting the image of Jesus Christ as an infant as well as a printed (on the fabric) yellow rose with buds and leaves. The fabric piece retains its original cording. The reverse of the piece bears the wording AGNUS DEI (printed on paper). Agnus Dei pieces were made by nuns and sold in the cathedrals of France. On the inside, there would be a small scraping of wax salvaged from candles used during services at the Vatican in Rome, Italy. Such pieces would be displayed in Catholic homes and revered as symbols of the faith.
Size of the stylized oval is 2-5/8" x 2-1/8". Very nice condition with just a faded look of age.
