I need to clear some space on my shelves, so I need to part with some of my collection. It seems like Star Trek has been around forever. I was just a kid when it (now called The Original Series) was on and I remember I wasn’t allowed to stay up to watch it. I only got to see it in syndication in the early 70’s when it was on between school and dinner. The whole family watched, except for dad, who was working (like a chump). Now there have been quite a few spin-offs, extensions and reboots which just confirm that the premise is timeless and compelling. The Original Series used actual models for all of their craft, as opposed to the digital models used later. Now you can have one of your own, in case you want to create a Star Trek series of your own. Here is what I have found about this remarkable kit:Round 2 is known for re-issuing popular kits from other lines, like AMT, but this is a brand new tool, so it is their own creation. The round2corp.com
site shows the cover art and provides the following brief blurb:
Few Star Trek ships are as popular or mysterious as the infamous Romulan Bird-of-Prey. The villainous ship played a key role in the STAR TREK: The Original Series episode “Balance of Terror.” The ship’s iconic design and blazing bird graphic have been painstakingly researched to deliver the utmost in authenticity in this snap-together model kit. The kit features all decals needed to decorate the ship accurately. It also includes a dome display base and pictorial assembly instructions.

Michael Benolkin did both a great First Look Review
and then a phenomenal Build Review
on the cybermodeler.com site. The initial review gives you a look at the parts and pieces, while the final review takes you through his experience painting and decaling this wonderful kit. He had a blast with this project saying: “
I'm quite pleased with the results. You're going to need one of these kits in your collection!
”
Tom Pope did a very professional Build Review on the IPMS site
and provides over 20 high resolution photos of the parts and progress of his immaculate work. He thinks you should get one, saying “
it will be a great addition to your Star Trek collection. I highly recommend this kit for anyone.
”
There is a nice Unboxing YouTube video from
Face Forward
which gives an introduction to Round 2 and their line of Star Trek subjects before delving into the history of this Bird-of-Prey within the Star Trek series. He then opens the box and gives you a front row seat to this simple, yet elegant, kit.
Starshipcollector
shows you the dazzling results of their build on the startrekstarships.wordpress.com
blog site and rates this “
simple yet striking model,
Overall: 5/5 (looks amazing)
”
Dan Lee’s Build Review on the modelingmadness.com site
starts with an excerpt from the Star Trek Wiki article that gives the entire history (although fictitious) of this warship. He goes through his build, providing tips along the way and spending most of the time on painting and finishing, of course. His summary included: “
The Polar Lights Bird-of-Prey is an excellent snap kit and shows how well Polar Lights has progressed since their first snap Star Trek kit
”.
Scalemates.com has a listing for this kit and confirms that it was released as a brand new tool in 2015. There is little other useful information about the kit.
This modern kit is in an intensely decorated box about 9.25” x 6.5” x 4”. As you can see from the pictures, the box is in great shape. It is still snug in its original shrink wrap, so it is
factory sealed and absolutely gift-ready.
This item contains one complete model kit with 12 white & two clear plastic parts, a wire frame stand and a black plastic base, along with the real star of the show: the immaculate decal sheet. It requires paint, but no glue (snap together assembly!) to complete as shown. I use eBay Managed Payments, but I no longer ship internationally. Auction winner pays the winning bid and, for a limited time, I am offering this nostalgic kit with
First Class Shipping in the US!
No reserve and a low starting bid. Check out my other great auctions for combined shipping. Good luck!
Those familiar with my listings can tell that I really enjoy these products and the modeling hobby. I like to provide more than just the bare facts about the items, trying to lead you into discovering more about the subjects and optimizing your builds (if that is your goal). I started out picking up models that I was interested in, with the eye toward building them when I had time. Always a bargain-hunter, I accumulated many more than I can build, so I found myself in a Collector status (sounds nicer than a hoarder).
As I am sure you have noticed, my items are almost always sealed and in mint condition (I call them Gift-Ready), since I only open them when I am ready to build them. Now I enjoy making these products available to my fellow modelers; both Builders and Collectors. For the Builders, there are probably better (at least cheaper) ways to add to your project lists than buying from me, but you know you are getting top quality. For Collectors, my goal is to save you a few bucks over the competition for the same item in factory sealed and collectible (or resellable) condition.
